Credit cards: the work of the devil or simply misunderstanding

Depends who you ask, really. If you ask some crazy guy that didn't take his medication, he might just tell you that credit cards are the work of the devil. Now, if you were to ask someone that is not bananas, they would probably tell you that their credit card debt stems from misunderstandings and irresponsibility.

The key to being successful and avoiding problems in the future with your credit cards comes in a number of ways. First of all, live within your means. There is no reason you should use credit cards as a tool to live well outside your income bracket. Do you very best to avoid purchasing goods and services you know you can't afford without a credit card.

Another key to financial stability is avoiding minimums. Did you know that a $10,000 debt at 18.5% interest typically takes 32 years and $24,500 to pay off if you don't pay more than the required monthly minimum? Of course you knew that, you are currently living that way. Paying the minimums on credit cards with huge deficits is a losing and long-term battle. You may win the war, but the battle is far from over.

A third and very important pice of advice is simple: read the fine print. We know how it works at most homes across America. If it isn't a bill, it get torn and tossed. You can't think that way anymore. Sometimes those are offers, changes and other things that are extremely important to your financial future. Avoid making these mistakes with your credit cards and credit companies and you will have already made a substantial difference in your future.
